Workplace Support
How does the RCM support its members at work?
Should the worst happen, our members can rest assured that they have the best support at their disposal. The RCM offers assistance and advice in a range of areas, from professional advice, disciplinary hearings and sickness reviews, through to collective employment relations support and representation.
Workplace representatives
Our network of workplace representatives should be your first point of call. Elected by you in your workplace, RCM workplace representatives, either as stewards, learning representatives or health and safety representatives, offer support and help to members when they are faced with employment and professional issues at work. If you do not know who your workplace representative is, please contact the RCM on 0300 303 0444.
Regional/national officers
Based around the UK, our team of regional and national officers are experts in employment relations. All of our regional and national officers are experienced, registered midwives, so you can feel comfortable that they can relate to your issues and concerns.
Through our network of workplace representatives and regional/national officers, we help members solve problems; from incorrect pay banding and errors in their pay packet, to changes in contracts and alteration of terms and conditions of employment. We help to point out unsafe working practices and whistleblowing and we also offer support with allegations of bullying, harassment and cases of discrimination. Workplace representatives can also support your learning and professional development needs.
Organisers
The RCM has a network of organisers that support RCM branches and members in the workplace. They work alongside branch officers, workplace representatives and MSW advocates to ensure that members get the best value out of their RCM membership.
RCM branches
Over 200 RCM branches hold regular meetings for members where they give and receive support, as well as discuss professional and workplace issues. Many RCM branches host learning events and celebrate the work of midwives and maternity support workers (MSW) on International Day of the Midwife (IDM) and during MSW Week.
Financial assistance
The Benevolent Fund of the RCM Trust is a charity whose main aim is to support midwives and maternity support workers in times of financial need, helping to get lives and careers back on track. Find out how to make an application to the Benevolent Fund.
